tips for camping with your dog this summer

Camping with dogs can be a no-brainer for those that do it regularly, but for new dog owners or those new to camping it can be so daunting.

"What if I forget something?" "What if he can't settle into the tent?" "What if we get there and our site doesn't allow dogs?" These are all questions and worries that raced through our minds as we prepare for a busy summer season outdoors.

I'm going to try to break it down for you so that you don't get too stressed!

Before camping:

  1. Make sure the site you're booking is dog friendly
  2. Ensure your pup is on a flea/tick medication or preventative of some kind
  3. Locate the nearest vet in case of any emergencies

Optional: trial run in the backyard! Not all dogs are camping dogs, and not all of them will be comfortable with the tent right away.

On to the fun stuff…

Essentials for camping with dogs:

  • Food, including an extra day or two worth of meals
  • Bowls
  • Treats!
  • Stake + long lead to keep you pup tied at the camp site, if needed
  • A chew or two to keep them occupied during downtime
  • If you have a water dog or one that likes getting dirty, I highly recommend Biothane gear like this collar at Prairie Dog Collar Co
  • Vet Records (including up to date vaccines!)
  • ID Tag on your pup’s collar
  • Dog Poop Bags + your Olive and Hound Waste Pouch!
  • A Pup Pouch or zippered bag to keep your dog's poop
  • Bed or a blanket, to keep them off the dirty ground and especially if they get chilly at night (looking at you short haired doggos!)
  • Life jacket for your dog if you’ll be bringing them along for water sports!
  • First Aid kit
  • Extra collar and leash
  • Dust pan + broom (dogs pick up SO much dirt and twigs, then proceed to bring it into the tent)

I also like to bring a brush, tick comb, and nail clippers just in case.

If you go camping with your pup this summer and have some tips to add, we'd love to hear them!
